How to Travel to Shoilo Propat

How to Travel to Shoilo Propat

Shoilo Propat, a waterfall in Sreemangal, is one of the few places in Bangladesh where you can see water falling over a rocky cliff. It’s not a massive waterfall, but the setting—surrounded by tea gardens and hills—makes it a popular stop for visitors. The waterfall is about 8 kilometers from Sreemangal town, and getting there requires a combination of road and walking.

Start from Sreemangal. Most travelers arrive by train or bus from Dhaka. The overnight train from Dhaka to Sreemangal leaves around 11:30 PM and arrives about 6:30 AM. The fare for a non-AC seat is around 250 taka. Alternatively, buses from Dhaka’s Sayedabad or Kamalapur bus stands take about 4 to 5 hours and cost 300 to 500 taka depending on the bus type. From Sreemangal bus stand, you can take a local rickshaw or CNG to the Sreemangal town center.

Once in Sreemangal, you need to get to the Lawachara National Park entrance area. The waterfall is located inside the park. Hire a CNG from Sreemangal town to the park entrance. The ride takes about 20 minutes and costs around 150 to 200 taka. Tell the driver you’re going to Shoilo Propat. The road is paved but narrow in parts. At the park entrance, you’ll need to pay a small entry fee—foreigners usually pay 200 taka, locals 20 taka. The park is open from 9:00 AM to 5:00 PM.

Walking to the Waterfall

From the park entrance, it’s a 1.5-kilometer walk through the forest to reach Shoilo Propat. The trail is well-trodden and easy to follow. It takes about 30 minutes at a leisurely pace. The path goes through a mix of rubber and tea plantations, then into denser forest. You’ll cross a small stream via a bamboo bridge. The waterfall itself is a 15-meter drop over a rocky face. There’s a pool at the bottom where you can wade, but be careful—the rocks are slippery.

Wear sturdy shoes. The trail can be muddy after rain. Take water and insect repellent. There are no food stalls at the waterfall, so carry snacks if you plan to stay long. Mobile network coverage is patchy inside the park.

Best Time and Return Travel

The best time to visit Shoilo Propat is during the monsoon and post-monsoon months, from June to October, when the waterfall has the most water. In dry months (November to March), the flow is much reduced. Avoid visiting during heavy rain as the trail becomes slippery and the stream may swell. The park can be closed during extreme weather.

Returning to Sreemangal is straightforward. Walk back to the park entrance and find a CNG. There are usually a few waiting near the gate. If not, you can call a driver from a shop nearby—ask at the ticket counter. The return ride costs the same as coming. From Sreemangal, you can catch a bus or train back to Dhaka. The last direct train to Dhaka leaves around 7:00 PM. Buses run until late evening.

If you want to stay overnight, there are guesthouses in Sreemangal town and a few eco-resorts near the park. Book ahead during peak season. The area is safe, but keep your belongings secure and don’t leave valuables unattended. Confirm current park entry fees and CNG fares locally before you go, as prices can change.

Frequently Asked Questions

Do I need a guide to visit Shoilo Propat?

No, you don’t need a guide. The trail is clearly marked and easy to follow. However, if you want to learn about the local flora and fauna, you can hire a guide at the park entrance for around 300 to 500 taka.

Is Shoilo Propat safe for swimming?

The pool at the base of the waterfall is shallow and generally safe for wading. But swimming is not recommended because the rocks are slippery and there are no lifeguards. Be cautious, especially after rain when the current can be stronger.

Can I visit Shoilo Propat during the dry season?

Yes, but the waterfall will have very little water. In the dry months (November to March), the flow reduces significantly, and you may only see a trickle. The surrounding forest is still pleasant for a walk, but the main attraction is diminished.

What should I bring for the hike?

Wear comfortable walking shoes with good grip. Bring at least one liter of water, insect repellent, a hat, and snacks. A rain jacket is useful during monsoon. Mobile network is weak, so download maps offline if needed. You don’t need a torch for the daytime walk.

Are there toilets or restrooms near Shoilo Propat?

There are basic toilets at the Lawachara National Park entrance, but not near the waterfall itself. Use the facilities before starting the walk. The toilets are squat-style and may not be very clean, so carry tissue and hand sanitizer.
