How to Travel to Rabindranath Tagore’s Kuthibari

If you’re planning to visit Rabindranath Tagore’s Kuthibari in Shilaidaha, the main question is how to get there from your starting point. The Kuthibari is in Kumarkhali upazila, Kushtia district, about 250 km northwest of Dhaka. Most travelers begin from Dhaka.

Getting to Kushtia by Bus

The most practical way is to take a bus from Dhaka to Kushtia. Several non-AC and AC buses operate from the Gabtoli bus terminal. Non-AC buses cost around 300-400 BDT and take 5-6 hours. AC buses cost around 500-700 BDT and take about 4-5 hours. Buses leave from early morning until late evening. You can buy tickets at the terminal or through online platforms like Shohoz. Arrive at least 30 minutes before departure.

From Kushtia to Shilaidaha

Once in Kushtia, you need to reach Shilaidaha, which is about 25 km south. Local buses from Kushtia’s bus stand to Shilaidaha run frequently. The fare is around 50-70 BDT and the journey takes 40 minutes to an hour. Alternatively, you can hire a CNG auto-rickshaw for about 500-700 BDT, which is faster and more comfortable.

Local Transport and Entry

The Kuthibari is open from 9 AM to 5 PM, except on public holidays. Entry is free. There is no parking fee for private vehicles. Inside, you can walk around the mansion and the surrounding grounds. Mobile network coverage is good in the area. You’ll find basic food stalls near the entrance. Return to Kushtia by the same transport. From Kushtia, you can catch a return bus to Dhaka until late evening. Confirm bus schedules at the terminal before your return trip.

Frequently Asked Questions

Is there a direct train from Dhaka to Shilaidaha?

No direct train to Shilaidaha. The nearest railway station is Kushtia, which is served by trains like the Sundarban Express from Dhaka. From Kushtia station, you need to take a bus or CNG to Shilaidaha.

Can I visit Kuthibari as a day trip from Dhaka?

Yes, it’s possible but tight. Start early from Dhaka by bus around 6 AM, reach Kushtia by 10-11 AM, then to Shilaidaha by noon. Spend 2-3 hours at Kuthibari, return to Kushtia by 4 PM, and catch a bus back to Dhaka by 5-6 PM. You’ll arrive in Dhaka by 10-11 PM.

Are there hotels near Kuthibari?

Shilaidaha has a few basic guesthouses. For better options, stay in Kushtia town where you’ll find hotels like Hotel Green City and Hotel Al-Amin. Book in advance during peak tourist season.

What is the best time to visit?

Winter (November to February) is best due to mild weather. Summer (March to June) is hot and humid. Monsoon (July to October) brings heavy rain, which can make roads muddy and travel difficult.
