How to Travel to Madhabkunda Waterfall

How to Travel to Madhabkunda Waterfall

Getting to Madhabkunda Waterfall, one of Bangladesh’s tallest waterfalls, takes planning. The waterfall is in Moulvibazar district, Sylhet division, near the India border. Most travelers start from Sylhet city or Dhaka.

From Sylhet, the most direct route is by road. You can take a bus or hire a private car from Sylhet’s main bus terminal to Barlekha upazila. The distance is about 70 kilometers and takes around 2 hours. Buses leave regularly from Sylhet’s Kadamtali bus stand. From Barlekha, you need to go to Madhabkunda Eco Park. Local buses and CNG autorickshaws run from Barlekha to the park entrance. The trip takes another 30-40 minutes.

From Dhaka to Madhabkunda

If you start from Dhaka, you have two main options. First, take a direct bus from Dhaka to Sylhet. Several bus companies operate overnight and day services from Sayedabad and Gabtoli terminals. The journey takes about 5-6 hours. From Sylhet, follow the route described above. Second, take a direct bus from Dhaka to Moulvibazar district. Some buses go to Moulvibazar town, which is closer to Barlekha. From Moulvibazar, you can take a local bus or CNG to Barlekha, then onward to the waterfall.

Train travel is also possible. You can take the Parjatan Express or Joyontika Express from Dhaka to Sylhet. The train takes about 7 hours. From Sylhet railway station, take a rickshaw or auto to the bus terminal for Barlekha.

Entry and Local Transport

Madhabkunda Waterfall is inside Madhabkunda Eco Park. There is an entry fee for the park. Foreign visitors pay a higher fee than locals. The park is open every day, usually from 8 am to 5 pm. During the monsoon season (June to September), the waterfall is at its fullest, but trails can be slippery. The dry season (November to March) offers easier walking but less water volume.

Inside the park, you walk from the entrance to the waterfall viewpoint. The walk is about 1.5 kilometers on a paved path. There are some stairs near the waterfall. You can also hire a local guide at the entrance for a small fee. The guide can show you the best viewing spots and safer paths.

Accommodation and Food

There are basic rest houses and cottages inside Madhabkunda Eco Park run by the Forest Department. You can book in advance through the Moulvibazar Forest Office. Private hotels are available in Barlekha town, about 10 kilometers away. These are cheaper and have more options. For food, there are small eateries at the park entrance selling rice, curry, and snacks. Barlekha has more restaurants with Bengali food.

Mobile network coverage is available at the waterfall area, but signal strength varies. Bring cash, as there are no ATMs near the park. Dress modestly and wear comfortable shoes. The waterfall area can be crowded on weekends and public holidays. For the best experience, visit on a weekday.

Return travel follows the same route in reverse. Confirm the last bus or CNG from Barlekha to Sylhet or Moulvibazar before you head to the park. If you miss the last bus, you may need to hire a private car at a higher cost.
