Saint Martin’s Island is Bangladesh’s only coral island, located in the Bay of Bengal about 9 km south of the Teknaf peninsula. The island is small, roughly 8 km long and 1 km wide, with a population that swells during the tourist season. Most visitors come between November and March, when the weather is dry and the sea is calm.
Starting Point and Getting to Teknaf
Your journey begins in Teknaf, the southernmost mainland town in Bangladesh. From Dhaka, the most common route is a bus to Cox’s Bazar, then a local bus or CNG to Teknaf. Direct overnight buses from Dhaka to Teknaf are also available; they take about 10-12 hours. From Chittagong, buses to Teknaf run regularly, taking around 6-7 hours. There is no train service to Teknaf. The nearest airport is in Cox’s Bazar, from where you can take a bus or hire a car for the 90 km drive to Teknaf.
Sea Crossing to Saint Martin’s Island
From Teknaf, you take a passenger launch or speedboat to the island. Two types of vessels operate: the larger passenger launches (called “ferries” locally) and smaller speedboats. The launch journey takes about 2 to 2.5 hours, while speedboats take around 1.5 hours. Tickets for launches can be bought at the Teknaf launch terminal on the day of travel. Prices vary by season and vessel type. Speedboats are faster but more expensive and can be uncomfortable in rough seas. Launches are the more common choice for budget travellers. During peak season (December to February), it’s wise to buy your ticket early in the morning, as launches fill up quickly. The departure time is usually around 9:00 AM to 10:00 AM, but confirm the exact schedule at the terminal the day before.
Accommodation and Local Transport on the Island
Saint Martin’s Island has no cars. The main mode of transport is walking, or you can hire a bicycle or a local “van” (a three-wheeled rickshaw). Accommodation is concentrated in the northern part of the island, near the jetty. You’ll find guesthouses, cottages, and a few small hotels. Most are basic, with cold water and electricity only during certain hours. Book in advance during the peak season. Eating options are limited to small restaurants serving rice, fish, and dal. There is no ATM on the island, so bring enough cash. Mobile network coverage is available but can be patchy. Dress modestly, as the island is conservative. Avoid swimming alone, especially during the monsoon. Return tickets from the island to Teknaf can be purchased at the launch office on the island, usually a day before departure.
