How to Travel to Char Kukri Mukri

Char Kukri Mukri is a remote island in the Bay of Bengal, part of the Char Fasson upazila of Bhola district. It is known for its mangrove forests and as a nesting site for sea turtles. The island has no permanent bridge connection, so the journey involves multiple steps.

Most travellers start from Dhaka. Take a bus from the Sayedabad or Gabtoli bus terminals to Barisal city. Several companies operate overnight and daytime buses. The journey takes about 6–8 hours depending on traffic and road conditions. From Barisal, you need to go to the launch terminal.

From Barisal, take a local launch or speedboat to Char Fasson. Public launches depart from Barisal’s Sadarghat launch terminal. The trip takes 3–4 hours by launch, less by speedboat. Tickets are available at the terminal counters. Char Fasson is the mainland gateway to the island.

Getting from Char Fasson to Char Kukri Mukri

From Char Fasson, you need to cross the river to the island. Local boats operate from Char Fasson’s riverbank. The crossing takes about 30–45 minutes depending on tide and weather. There is no fixed schedule; boats leave when enough passengers gather. You can also arrange a private boat.

During the dry season (November to March), the water level is lower and the crossing is easier. In the monsoon (June to October), strong currents and rough sea make the trip risky. Check the weather forecast and avoid travelling during storms.

Accommodation and facilities on the island

Char Kukri Mukri has very basic accommodation. There are a few small guesthouses or you may arrange to stay with local families. Bring your own food and drinking water, as shops are limited. Mobile network coverage is patchy; Grameenphone and Robi sometimes work near the coast.

There is no official permit required to visit the island, but the forest department may have rules if you plan to enter the mangrove area. Ask local authorities upon arrival. Wear light cotton clothes, a hat, and sunscreen. The sun is intense.

Return travel follows the same route in reverse. Confirm boat departure times with the boatman before you go to avoid being stranded. Always carry cash, as there are no ATMs on the island.

Do I need a permit to visit Char Kukri Mukri?

No official permit is required for general visits, but if you plan to explore the mangrove forest area, check with the local forest office. They may have specific rules.

What is the best time to travel to Char Kukri Mukri?

The best time is during the dry season from November to March. The weather is calm and the sea crossing is safer. Avoid the monsoon months from June to October.

Are there hotels on Char Kukri Mukri?

No proper hotels exist. You can stay in basic guesthouses or with local families. Bring your own sleeping bag, food, and water.

How long does it take to reach Char Kukri Mukri from Dhaka?

The entire journey takes about 12–14 hours: 6–8 hours by bus to Barisal, 3–4 hours by launch to Char Fasson, and 30–45 minutes by local boat to the island.

Is there mobile network coverage on the island?

Coverage is limited. Grameenphone and Robi may work near the coast but not inland. Expect patchy or no signal in many areas.
